L-Cysteine is one of the two proteinogenic amino acids that contain a sulfur atom (the other is methionine). It is considered a nonessential amino acid because it is produced in the human body. Individuals who are deficient in cysteine, however, must be treated with supplements.
When cysteine is oxidized, the two thiol hydrogen atoms are eliminated, and the sulfur atoms join to form the dimer L-cystine. In biological systems, the monomer and dimer interchange easily; thus, both acids are nutritionally similar.
A form of cysteine called L-cysteine may help treat arthritis and hardening of the arteries. It may help treat certain lung diseases. These include bronchitis, emphysema, and tuberculosis. Cysteine may play a role in the normal growth rate of hair. Cysteine may also help reduce the effects of aging on the skin.
L-cysteine is an important precursor for antioxidants such as glutathione - a product metabolized in the liver. Glutathione is essential for the breakdown of toxins in the body, such as alcohol. L-cysteine is also the precursor for other important antioxidants that help ward off cancer by decreasing the incidence of cell mutation.
