1. Anti-anaerobic infections
Applicable parts: Used for anaerobic infections in the abdominal cavity, pelvis, dentistry (e.g. periodontitis), gynaecology (e.g. bacterial vaginitis) and soft tissues of the skin.
Mechanism of action: It is converted into metronidazole in the body and kills anaerobic bacteria by interfering with bacterial DNA synthesis.
2. Antimicrobial Infections
Disease types: Treatment of amoebic dysentery, vaginal trichomoniasis, Giardia flagellosis, etc.
Advantages: Effective for intestinal and genitourinary protozoal infections, especially for patients who cannot use metronidazole directly.
3. Combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori
Regimen composition: Combined with proton pump inhibitors and antibiotics (e.g. amoxicillin) to eradicate H. pylori and treat gastric ulcers and gastritis.
4. Tolerance optimisation
Pre-drug advantage: as a pre-drug of metronidazole, it may reduce gastrointestinal irritation (e.g. nausea, metallic taste) when taken orally, suitable for those who are intolerant to metronidazole.
5. Topical application
Dosage possibilities: if topical (e.g. gel or suppository), it may treat acne, oral infections or vaginitis and reduce systemic side effects.
